Monday, March 14th, 2005War – A Different Perspective
Olbea, currently the largest populated planet in the galaxy, came under an attack this week. However, this attack wasn’t your traditional bombs and guns attack, this was something new that hadn’t been tried before on a massive scale. This was an economic attack. Calculations from a few sources say that close to 2.5M were spent by Orsan to buy food off the market, and sell it to the black market, ultimately raising the price (temporarily) of food to a 200+ range. Orsan was also able to buy energy from the nearby starbases down to their minimums.
The ultimate goal here was to reduce the profitability of the system by increasing food prices and limiting energy supplies to the planet. On a tighter level, it looks like the goal was to completely drain the starbases of energy, and raise food and water to the 200+ price levels. This looked to have a two pronged attacked on the planet/starbase relationship. First, it would reduce profits. Period. Second, if the SB was pushed far enough, it might prevent the planet from receiving it’s cycle of energy unless additional energy was provided from elsewhere. This would cause the planet to produce less for the next cycle and may cause the SB to have less supplies. From what this reporter could gather, it was the idea to cause a downward cascade between the SB and the planet because of a lack of resources at one or the other.
How did this gambit ultimately play out? Well, as far as I can tell, it had an impact, but surely not as big as Orsan had hoped. Olbea still stands as the most populated planet. Seeing as this was the first ‘true’ economic warfare attempt, it will be interesting to see if and how this tactic is refined in the future.
Building Inspectors Defend Themselves
Last week, the Intergalactic Department of Building Safety was buried in hate mail. Building owners across the galaxy sent mail basically saying, well, that the new policies sucked. In an attempt to placate the masses, the Building Department quickly approved two new building defenses in an attempt to at least SLOW the hate mail (or more importantly, the contracts on their heads). The first of two new defenses, the tractor beam, was introduced this week. With the ability to keep an attacker in combat for longer than the attacker may want, the tractor beam gives raiders a bit less certainty when attacking buildings. It looks like raiders may need to be a bit more cautious when attacking now, as they may get stuck in combat a bit longer than they anticipated, and may end up being destroyed because of it. The second new defense, the command center, is a module placed in military outposts that provides additional manpower which increases the ability for which an MO is able to defend itself. All in all, a great addition for any MO owner. Although building owners still dislike changes in the building code, the new defenses have helped soothe the masses a bit…
TIACKEN PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
The Tiacken Board of Fishy Public Relations would like to invite everyone to the 1st Annual Tiackenian fish fry. Located on the coasts of T1 through Tiacken 1, the fish fry will see everything fried from the common Blue Mongul, to the extremely rare (at least on T1) Sand Shark. For only 75 credits each, you can eat, fish, and drink your way to a better night. Hope to see you there!!
Weaseled into a Corner
The AWC looks to have received its first surrendering alliance. The alliance? The Divine Order of the Weasel. A newly created alliance, the DOW begrudgingly surrendered to the AWC simply because it looks as if the DOW and AWC have much the same goals – to defeat the incoming Space Weasel invasion. Unfortunately, the two have two different methods of getting there, and one required the surrendering of the other. Will others follow DOW’s lead? Based on initial reactions, it looks unlikely, however, you never can tell. All it takes is one major alliance to switch and the tables turn quite a bit.
Counting Conglomo
I received a PM this week from the Conglomo, an alliance that I’d honesly never heard of and an alliance that had never really made any waves in the grand scheme of things. So I decided to take a bit of a closer look. Based WAY, WAY out of the way on the eastern portion of Keldon territories (Greandin and Iniolol), I actually had to look these territories up on a map. I’d never heard of them, much less TRAVELED to them.
So what is Conglomo about? Conglomo is an alliance that is striving to bring strong trade and economy to their portion of Keldon space. As is often the case, CASH IS KING to Conglomo and they’ll take control of it in their area of influence as best they can. Building permits are required (approval from Denezar – CEO and Demonic Overlord of Conglomo) but outsiders are allowed to build there. Despite the Demonic Overlord, Conglomo says they are a peaceful alliance, only wishing to amass large amounts of cash. Conglomo is currently looking for new members, so if you’re interested, feel free to send a PM to Deenezar or take a look at their alliance page for more information.

Please be on the lookout for his person in your day to day travels, and contact the local militia upon sightings. Thank you.
